Much better than expected Dec 31, 2009
By K. Keydel I had wanted a Rogue starter guitar for my six-year-old daughter who has expressed an interest in learning the guitar (I play guitar quite a bit). They were out of stock and according to Musician's Friend, weren't getting any more in. So I settled on this Dean instead. The price was unbeatable. I had read a few reviews online that said this was nothing more than a toy and nearly worthless as an instrument. Even though Dean makes some decent guitars, my expectations were set pretty low.
The guitar arrived prior to Christmas so I had a chance to unwrap it, tune it, and try it out. I was surprised - the intonation isn't perfect, but it isn't that disastrous, either. The chords are mostly in tune up the neck, but I doubt my daughter would be playing too far up there anyway. The construction is solid and the tuning pegs seem adequate. My only complaint was that I had ordered a pink guitar and received the classic black. In hindsight, I may have made a good choice because the black finish isn't bad at all. My only suggestion would be to include even lighter gauge strings since the action is high (as you would expect on something this cheap). My daughter's fingers are barely strong enough to press the high E string to the 3rd fret.
The guitar has a nice low tonality - it isn't crisp, but it isn't muted either. There are no problems with string buzz or fret sounds. I have to say this guitar is definitely more than "just a toy". With some new strings, I can set this up to help my daughter get started and hold her interest. How long will she own and play this guitar? If guitar is to be her instrument, then I would be getting something nicer perhaps a year from now. As an instroduction to guitar, it sounds nice and is well worth its price.
