The best & most musical CMP I've ever used Jul 09, 2009
By Mark Showalter This is the best CMP I have ever used. In a word it is "musical" which is the only way I can seperate this pedal from others I've used. I was able to find very usable settings & quickly incorporated it into my FX rig. The sustain is not only natural but very transparent.....in a word "musical". Look no further than this gadget, especially considering the price you can't go wrong.

Disappointing Pedal Jan 03, 2013
By Jp

At best, this pedal is ok. It does what it purports to do, but it does bad things to your tone. The compression is not "natural", but gives you the feeling someone is stepping on your sound. The sustain works, but it feels "false" and strange. In fairness, I have tried hard to avoid any compression, but I thought this one would work well for my style of playing. I'm going to play with it more, but thus far, I can't recommend it...I'll report back if I change my mind.

Philosopher's Tone: Where Have You Been? Apr 27, 2011
By Knight Rider
"Be Cool, Be Kind, and Be Well"
This is the first compressor I really liked, and I've tried a few, including some high-priced and well-regarded models. Considering how well the Philosopher's Tone performs, it's price is very reasonable in comparison to competing pedals.
PICK ATTACK All compressors affect the pick attack, and they do so in a way I don't like. The Philosopher's Tone has the least intrusive effect on the attack - at times not even an issue - and as advertised, it is also the easiest to dial in. Essentially, I dial a setting I like and forget about it. Some other pedals - even good ones - are more finicky about minor changes to the other knobs or about switching between single coils and humbuckers.
NOISE LEVELS The Philosopher's Tone gives usable amounts of compression and sustain quietly. You can also dial them way up - and with them some noise, but the amount of noise is reasonable.
OTHER GOODIES Another bonus is the grit setting, which works really well for my tastes. I liked the grit so much that I found myself trying to decide whether to use the pedal mainly for dirt versus mainly for clean sustain and compression. Finally, the Philosopher's Tone is very flexible IMO, as a result of also having the tweakable blend and treble controls.
THE DARK SIDE My one and only knitpick is the jack layout. It is not standard and not peddle board friendly. I'm sure the folks at Pigtronix had their reasons for this, but it would be really nice if the layout could be changed to have the input on the right and output on the left.
Nevertheless, all things considered this is the best compressor/sustainer I've found, and I'm really glad to have it.

Nice Pedal Sep 09, 2012
By Michael It took me awhile to figure out the settings that gave me the sound I was looking for. This is my first compressor pedal. Overall I am happy with the pedal and the experience with the seller. No complaints.
