Fun, but only includes chord charts and lyrics Oct 13, 2008
By M. Keisling This is an enjoyable book for campfire or other gatherings. I was surprised, however, when it arrived. What is included is more of a set of lyrics pages, with chord charts above each line. There is no musical notation or tablature. I'm glad I have it, and my family enjoyed using it for a three-guitar and mandolin jam session and sing-along at a beach house. The book is fun, and I'm glad I bought it, but I wanted to provide a more detailed description of what you are looking at.

fun at a campout Jun 07, 2010

I would agree with the other reviewer that the book is mostly lyrics and chords, but I would still recommend this book. I had one copy for a couple of years and finally bought two more so the "singers" could share some copies and not have to look over my shoulder. the chords are simple and you get to do your own thing as far as strumming style is concerned, which is about perfect when you are sitting around a campfire. The book is a combination of old folk, classic rock and even a gospel song or two. Most of the songs would be familiar to most people (well, most adults anyway). I just starting to pack for a mini family reunion/camp out and several people have already reminded me to bring my guitar, this will be the book that I bring along.

By Chris I didn't realize how much I needed the musical notations until I didn't have it (as in this book). The chords are typically spot on (i had a few problems with Sloop John B - it just doesn't sound right playing it in E), but unless you really know the song, its hard to figure out when to change or what the tempo is of the song. When I'm learning the song from this book, I typically have to utilize other resources more so than typical, such as multiple listens of the actual song on youtube or various other internet tabs. However, once you get a fair amount of the songs down (which I'm working to do), it is a good resource and you can bring this handy book anywhere.
